What is meant by intradermal suture
The intradermal suture is a particular type of cutaneous suture. The latter refers to the operation of sewing together two flaps of skin divided due to an operation or trauma, to promote healing that is as less traumatic and visible as possible.
The intradermal suture is the highest level of a skin suture. It is a suture with an excellent aesthetic result, where the healing leaves no obvious signs.Precisely for this reason it is the type of suture preferably used by cosmetic surgeons.
Very thin needles and threads are used, passed directly into the skin and which avoid decubitus, and it is a type of continuous suture, where the thread is not interrupted between the various points.
Differences between absorbable and removable sutures
The sutures are divided into two large groups, absorbable and non-absorbable ones.
Resorbable stitches are in fact not removed by the doctor.Due to their particular composition they disappear independently thanks to the action of some enzymes present in the tissues.
They can therefore remain inside the human organism for a long period of time, effectively dissolving without leaving any sign, and only once the wound has completely healed are they absorbed by the organism itself.
The absorbable sutures are preferably intradermal, therefore subcutaneous, and are preferable for light wounds or for healing parts of incisions. Depending on their extension and the material used, they can dissolve after a few days or even several months.
The non-absorbable sutures instead must be removed by a doctor, who will do so with a timing suited to the type of wound. This type of suture can instead leave marks on the skin, the classic scar, with the skin appearing lighter in those points.
Other factors that can lead, after the removal of the stitches, to marks on the skin are the delay in eliminating the stitches themselves, applying too tightly or using staples.
How stitches should be removed
For non-absorbable stitches, manual removal of the applied sutures is therefore necessary.
Its timing depends greatly on the position of the body in which they were placed, which involves different healing times. For example, on the face they can be removed after 3-5 days, on the arms after 7-10 days, from 10 to 14 days for legs, torso, hands and feet, while between 7 and 10 days for the scalp. Finally, for the palms of the hands or feet the times are longer, from 14 to 21 days.
This operation must necessarily be carried out by a doctor, who will ensure that the wound has healed definitively before proceeding with the removal of the stitches.
In the case of staples, they must be removed one by one with specific pliers called staple removers.
In the case of a thread suture, the doctor takes one end of the same thread, cutting one of the threads that enter the skin, then proceeding to simply remove it.
Possible suture materials and differences
The different suturing methods also involve the use of different materials, such as synthetic materials, composed of a monofilament (a single thread, for the most minor wounds) or of various intertwined threads.
Reabsorbable sutures are often placed under the skin during surgical operations, also so as not to be forced to reopen the body to remove the stitches. The preferable materials are therefore natural materials such as linen or cotton, or made of more complex substances such as woven polyglactin or particular oxidized and regenerated celluloses, completely produced on a plant-based basis, and therefore without dangers for the organism.
As regards the non-absorbable suture, the use of silicone-coated braided polyester is preferred on the market, which ensures permanent support and resistance, or polyamide, nylon, or even a non-absorbable material it is the silk.
For both absorbable and non-absorbable sutures, there are complete kits on the market with gauges and needles of different sizes, as well as thread made of different materials depending on the use to be made of it,and on which part of the body it must act.
