Importance of Rapid Malaria Diagnosis
Malaria is caused by a protozoan that invades human red blood cells and is one of the most widespread infectious diseases in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 300-500 million cases annually, with over 1 million deaths, mainly among newborns and young children. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and for reducing the mortality associated with this disease.
Test Principle
The P.f. rapid cassette test for malaria uses an immunological membrane-based principle for the detection of the P.f. antigen in whole blood. The membrane is coated with specific antibodies, and the blood sample reacts with a dye, allowing the visualization of a colored line that indicates the presence or absence of the antigen.
Use Procedure
Sample Collection and Preparation
- The test can be performed using whole blood, either by venous draw or finger prick.
- For finger-prick collection: wash and dry the patient's hands, prick the finger with a sterile lancet, and collect the blood.
